What Is a Fuel Cost Calculator?
A fuel cost calculator estimates fuel used and cost per trip, per week, per month and per year from distance, fuel economy in miles per gallon US, fuel price per gallon and trips per week. It also shows cost per mile and gallons per trip, week and year.
Distance and Round Trip: Distance one-way is miles for one direction. If round trip selected yes, effective distance doubles. Example 30 miles one-way round trip 60 miles effective. Gallons per trip = effective distance divided by MPG.
MPG and Fuel Price: MPG is miles per US gallon. Example 25 MPG means 25 miles per gallon. Fuel price is dollars per US gallon. Cost per trip = gallons per trip multiplied by price per gallon. Cost per mile = price divided by MPG.
Trips and Totals: Trips per week is how many times you make the trip each week. Weekly cost = cost per trip multiplied by trips per week. Monthly cost = weekly cost multiplied by 52 divided by 12. Annual cost = weekly cost multiplied by 52. Annual gallons = gallons per trip multiplied by trips per week multiplied by 52.
How To Use This Fuel Cost Calculator
Step 1 - Enter distance, MPG and price: Enter distance one-way - example 30 miles - and fuel economy - example 25 MPG - and fuel price - example $3.75 per gallon. Assumption: MPG is actual combined average, actual varies by city, highway, load, AC. Fuel price is current pump price.
Step 2 - Enter trips and round trip: Enter trips per week - example 5 - for work commute 5 days. Select round trip yes or no - example yes round trip means 30 miles each way 60 miles per day. If no, 30 miles per day one-way only.
Step 3 - Review costs: Press Calculate Fuel Cost. Review cost per trip, weekly, monthly, annual, gallons per year, cost per mile and gallons per trip. Test: 30 miles one-way 25 MPG 3.75 price trips 5 round trip yes effective 60 miles gallons per trip 60/25=2.4 cost per trip 2.4×3.75=$9.00 weekly 9×5=$45 monthly $45×52/12=$195 annual $45×52=$2,340 gallons per year 2.4×5×52=624 gallons cost per mile 3.75/25=$0.15 per mile.
How It Calculates — Formula & Methodology
Source: Standard fuel economy formula gallons = distance / MPG and cost = gallons × price.
EffDist = Distance × (Round?2:1) | GalTrip = EffDist / MPG | CostTrip = GalTrip × Price | CostMile = Price / MPG | Weekly = CostTrip × TripsWeek | Monthly = Weekly ×52/12 | Annual = Weekly ×52 | GalYear = GalTrip × TripsWeek ×52
Steps with example Distance 30 one-way MPG 25 Price $3.75 Trips 5 Round Yes:
- Effective distance = 30 ×2 =60 miles
- Gallons per trip =60/25=2.4 gallons
- Cost per trip =2.4×$3.75=$9.00
- Cost per mile = $3.75/25=$0.15 per mile
- Weekly cost =$9.00×5=$45.00, Weekly gallons =2.4×5=12 gallons
- Monthly cost =$45×52/12=$195.00, Monthly gallons =12×52/12=52 gallons
- Annual cost =$45×52=$2,340, Annual gallons =2.4×5×52=624 gallons
Edge handling: Distance ≤0 validation, MPG ≤0 validation must be greater than zero to avoid division by zero, price negative floored to 0, trips negative floored to 0, round trip yes/no check, cost per mile = price / MPG if MPG>0 else 0, monthly factor 52/12 =4.333..., annual factor 52 weeks.
What Results Mean
Cost Per Trip: Fuel cost for one effective trip. Example $9.00 for 60 miles effective at 25 MPG $3.75. This is gallons per trip × price.
Weekly Cost: Cost per trip × trips per week. Example $45.00 for 5 trips.
Monthly Cost: Weekly cost ×52/12. Example $195.00 per month average.
Annual Cost: Weekly cost ×52. Example $2,340 per year.
Gallons Per Year: Total gallons used per year = gallons per trip × trips per week ×52. Example 624 gallons per year.
Cost Per Mile: Fuel price divided by MPG. Example $0.15 per mile. Trip cost = cost per mile × effective distance. Example $0.15×60=$9.00 matches cost per trip.
Example — Worked Comparisons
Base: Distance 30 one-way MPG 25 Price $3.75 Trips 5 Round Yes.
Outputs: CostTrip $9.00 Weekly $45 Monthly $195 Annual $2,340 Gallons Year 624 Cost/Mile $0.15.
Comparison A - Improve MPG to 35: Same distance 30 round 60 price $3.75 trips 5 MPG 35 gallons per trip 60/35=1.714 cost per trip $6.43 weekly $32.14 monthly $139.28 annual $1,671 gallons year 445.7 cost per mile $0.107. Savings annual $2,340-$1,671=$669 with higher MPG.
Comparison B - Higher fuel price $5.00: Same distance 30 round 60 MPG 25 trips 5 price $5.00 gallons per trip 2.4 cost per trip $12 weekly $60 monthly $260 annual $3,120 gallons same 624 cost per mile $0.20. Increase $0.25 per gallon? Actually price increase $1.25 raises annual $780.
Comparison C - One-way only vs round: Same 30 miles MPG 25 price $3.75 trips 5 round No effective 30 gallons per trip 1.2 cost $4.50 weekly $22.50 monthly $97.50 annual $1,170 gallons year 312. Half of round trip. Shows round trip double.
Common Mistakes
- Using MPG zero or negative: Gallons = distance / MPG divides by zero if MPG zero. Must be greater than zero. This calculator validates MPG >0 and alerts if invalid.
- Forgetting round trip doubling: Entering 30 miles commute as one-way but actually driving both ways without selecting round trip yes understates cost by half. Select yes for round trip if you return same day.
- Confusing US vs imperial gallons: US gallon 3.785 liters, imperial gallon 4.546 liters. MPG US vs MPG imperial differ. This calculator uses US gallons. If you have imperial MPG, convert imperial MPG to US MPG = imperial MPG ×0.8327 before entering.
- Using monthly trips as weekly: Trips per week input is per week. If you enter 20 trips per month as weekly 20, weekly cost overstated by about 4.33×. Convert monthly trips to weekly = monthly trips /4.333. Example 20 monthly =4.62 weekly.
- Ignoring city vs highway MPG: City MPG lower than highway. Using highway MPG for city driving overstates efficiency and understates cost. Use combined or actual measured MPG for your route.
Practical Tip
Compare fuel cost by fixing distance and trips, then testing MPG impact. Each 5 MPG improvement from 20 to 25 MPG on 60 miles daily 5 trips week saves about 124.8 gallons per year and about $468 at $3.75. Improving from 25 to 30 MPG saves additional 83.2 gallons and $312. Fuel price sensitivity: each $0.50 per gallon increase raises annual cost by $312 on same 60 miles daily 5 trips. Use actual pump price for your area.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is fuel cost calculated?
Gallons per trip = effective distance divided by MPG where effective distance = distance ×2 if round trip yes else distance. Cost per trip = gallons per trip × fuel price per gallon. Cost per mile = fuel price / MPG. Weekly cost = cost per trip × trips per week. Monthly cost = weekly ×52/12. Annual cost = weekly ×52. Annual gallons = gallons per trip × trips per week ×52. Example 60 miles effective 25 MPG price $3.75 gallons 2.4 cost $9.00 weekly 5 trips $45 annual $2,340.
What is MPG?
MPG is miles per gallon - distance traveled per US gallon of fuel. Example 25 MPG means 25 miles per gallon. Higher MPG means less fuel for same distance. Combined MPG is weighted average of city and highway. Use your vehicle EPA combined or measured actual MPG for estimate.
Does round trip double cost?
Yes. If round trip selected yes, effective distance = distance ×2. Example one-way 30 miles round trip 60 miles. Gallons per trip doubles, cost per trip doubles, weekly monthly annual double compared to one-way. Select no if you only count one direction.
How to get cost per mile?
Cost per mile = fuel price per gallon divided by MPG. Example $3.75 /25 = $0.15 per mile. Trip cost = cost per mile × effective distance. Example 60 miles ×$0.15 = $9.00. Cost per mile useful for comparing vehicles independent of distance.
Does this include maintenance or insurance?
No. This calculates fuel cost only from distance, MPG and fuel price. Maintenance, oil changes, tires, insurance, depreciation, tolls, parking vary by vehicle and are not included. Total cost of ownership adds those items to fuel cost.
Is calculation for US gallons?
Yes. MPG is miles per US gallon and price is dollars per US gallon. Formula uses US gallon 3.785 liters. For liters, convert liters to gallons gallons = liters /3.785 or use liters per 100km conversion. For imperial gallons, convert imperial MPG to US MPG US MPG = imperial MPG ×0.8327 before entering.
Does this calculator save my data?
No. Calculation runs in your browser. Inputs are not sent to a server. When you close or reload, inputs reset to defaults. No data storage for this calculator component. Browser-side only. All terms validated, no Infinity or NaN displayed.
