Why Thanksgiving Week In Austin Texas Shows Different Workdays Than Los Angeles
A manager in Austin Texas ZIP 78701 checking November 20 to November 30 with Monday to Friday workweek sees 11 total days, 2 weekend days, 1 federal holiday Thanksgiving on fourth Thursday, net workdays 8 before PTO. If she takes 1 PTO on Friday after Thanksgiving, net drops to 7 workdays. Hours at 8 per day equals 56 hours.
Same dates in Los Angeles California ZIP 90001 still show 1 federal holiday. Federal count is same everywhere. California adds Cesar Chavez Day March 31 as state extra for info but does not change federal total. If you include state extra toggle in your company policy, you would count extra state holiday separately.
In Miami Florida ZIP 33101 with same range, result is identical for federal count. Difference appears around Christmas to New Year bridge. December 24 to January 2 includes Christmas December 25 and New Years January 1. If both fall on weekday, that range shows 10 total days, 2 weekend days, 2 federal holidays, net 6 workdays. Many companies close December 24 and December 31 as extra, but those are not federal.
Short range example July 3 to July 5 with Independence Day July 4 on Friday shows 3 total days, 0 weekend if Monday to Friday includes Friday, 1 holiday July 4, net 2 workdays. Long range example January 1 to December 31 full year with 5 day workweek shows 365 total days, about 104 weekend days, 11 federal holidays that fall on weekdays, net about 250 workdays. Exact number varies by year because holidays shift weekdays.
What Counts As Federal Holiday In This Calculator
Office of Personnel Management defines 11 holidays. New Years Day January 1, Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr third Monday January, Washingtons Birthday third Monday February often called Presidents Day, Memorial Day last Monday May, Juneteenth National Independence Day June 19, Independence Day July 4, Labor Day first Monday September, Columbus Day second Monday October, Veterans Day November 11, Thanksgiving Day fourth Thursday November, Christmas Day December 25. Inauguration Day January 20 every four years is observed for federal employees in Washington DC area.
Observed rule: If holiday falls on Saturday, federal employees observe on preceding Friday. If on Sunday, observed on following Monday. This calculator lists actual date and notes observed shift for clarity. Private sector may not follow observed shift, so check handbook.
State extra is for information only. Texas observes Texas Independence Day March 2 and Lyndon B Johnson Day August 27 as partial staffing, Florida observes no extra federal, California observes Cesar Chavez Day March 31 and Genocide Remembrance Day, New York observes Lincoln Birthday. Those do not affect federal count.
How To Use This Calculator Without Error
First, pick start date and end date inclusive. Use same month for short payroll or full year for annual planning. Start must be on or before end.
Second, choose workdays per week. Five days Monday to Friday is standard office. Six days Monday to Saturday for retail or service.
Third, enter PTO days planned in range. If you plan one day off Friday after Thanksgiving, enter one. Calculator subtracts PTO from net workdays.
Fourth, enter hours per workday. Eight is standard, ten for four day week, four for part time. Used to compute total work hours.
Fifth, select state for extra context. Federal count stays same. State field shows if your state adds extra holidays that your company may observe.
Sixth, hit calculate. You will see total calendar days, weekend days, federal holidays in range with names, net workdays and total work hours.
How Counting Works - Formula and Sources
Source: Office of Personnel Management federal holiday schedule, US Code Title 5 Section 6103, OPM observed date guidance, National Archives Inauguration Day history.
FORMULA
Total days = (End date minus Start date) in days plus 1 inclusive
Weekend days = Count days where weekday equals Saturday Sunday for 5 day week, Sunday only for 6 day week
Federal holidays in range = Count each federal holiday date that lies between start and end inclusive and falls on workday per selected workweek
Observed adjustment = If holiday on Saturday observed Friday, if Sunday observed Monday for federal employees
Net workdays = Total days minus Weekend days minus Federal holidays on workdays minus PTO days
Total work hours = Net workdays times Hours per workday
PTO adjusted workdays cannot go below zero
- Example Texas Nov 20 to Nov 30: total 11, weekend 2, federal 1 Thanksgiving, PTO 1, net 7
- Example California Dec 24 to Jan 2: total 10, weekend 2, federal 2 Christmas New Years, PTO 0, net 6
- Example Florida July 3 to July 5: total 3, weekend 0, federal 1 July 4, PTO 0, net 2
- Example Full year Jan 1 to Dec 31: total 365, weekend about 104, federal weekdays about 11, PTO 10, net about 240
Guards: Start after end swaps automatically, PTO capped at total days, hours 1 to 16, workweek 5 or 6 only, non finite set to zero, inclusive count.
What Each Result Box Means
Net Workdays: Calendar days minus weekends minus federal holidays that fall on workdays minus PTO. This is days you are expected to work per your schedule. Example 7 days for Thanksgiving week with one PTO.
Federal Holidays In Range: Number of OPM holidays whose actual date lies inside your range. List shown in blue bar. If holiday falls on weekend, observed date noted.
Total Calendar Days: Inclusive count from start to end. November 20 to November 30 equals 11 days.
Weekend Days: Days that are not workdays per your selected workweek. Five day week counts Saturday and Sunday, six day week counts Sunday only.
Total Work Hours: Net workdays times hours per workday. Eight hours times 7 days equals 56 hours.
Three Payroll Scenarios With Real USA Dates
Austin Texas 78701 Thanksgiving 2026: Start Nov 20 end Nov 30, workweek 5, PTO 1, hours 8, state Texas. Total 11, weekend 2, federal 1 Thanksgiving Nov 26, net 7, hours 56. Holiday list Thanksgiving. If you work retail six day week, weekend 1, net 8.
Los Angeles California 90001 Christmas Bridge: Start Dec 24 end Jan 2, workweek 5, PTO 0, hours 8, state California. Total 10, weekend 2 Saturday Sunday Dec 26 27 and Jan 2 is Sunday, federal 2 Christmas Dec 25 Friday and New Years Jan 1 Friday, net 6, hours 48. State extra Cesar Chavez Day not in range.
Miami Florida 33101 July Fourth Week: Start July 3 end July 7, workweek 5, PTO 0, hours 8, state Florida. Total 5, weekend 2 Saturday Sunday, federal 1 July 4 Saturday observed Friday July 3, net 2 if observed Friday counted, 3 if private employer does not observe. Calculator shows observed note.
Common Errors That Break Holiday Counts
- Forgetting inclusive count: Nov 20 to Nov 30 is 11 days not 10. Always include both start and end.
- Counting weekend holidays as extra day off: If July 4 is Saturday, federal observed Friday July 3. Do not count both Saturday and Friday as holidays.
- Mixing federal and state: Federal 11 are mandatory for federal employees. State extra like Texas Independence Day is not federal. Keep counts separate.
- Ignoring workweek: Six day retail week has only Sunday weekend, so more workdays in same range than five day office.
- Subtracting PTO that falls on holiday: If you take PTO on Thanksgiving, you are double counting. PTO should be only on workdays.
Planning Tips After You Get Count
Use net workdays to set payroll budget. Multiply net workdays by daily rate to estimate labor cost for period.
Use holiday list to plan customer communication. If you close on federal holidays, notify customers two weeks before.
Add ten percent buffer for sick days if you plan full year. 250 workdays times 0.9 equals 225 effective days.
Save result for audit. Many payroll systems require workday proof for monthly close.
Important Limitations To Remember
Educational estimate only. Not official OPM guidance or legal advice. Observed date rules apply to federal employees and may differ for private employers. Inauguration Day every four years applies only to Washington DC area for federal employees. Verify with OPM dot gov and your employer handbook.
